National Lockdown Starts 5th November 2020
What Does This Mean?
New measures are set to come into play from Thursday 5th November as England goes into national lockdown once more to help fight the effects of Covid-19.
The national lockdown is currently set to run until 2nd December, but it could be extended if the infection rate does not decline significantly.
This second national lockdown encourages everyone to stay home as much as possible and enforces the closure of non-essential retail stores. Visit the government website for more detailed information on what to expect from the new national restrictions.
Will Garages Stay Open During Lockdown?
Just as they did during the first national lockdown, car garages are able to stay open to continue providing essential services. Many rely on their vehicles to travel around and, especially with schools remaining open during the second lockdown, it is vital that motorists have access to vehicle maintenance and servicing.
If your car is due a service or you are experiencing issues with your vehicle, you are still able to book in at your nearest Elite Garages site.
Can I Still Get My MOT Done?
Yes, even after the lockdown measures are enforced, MOT testing centres will remain open and you will be able to get your car booked in and MOT tested.
We recommend that you leave plenty of time to book your MOT before it expires as we are currently experiencing increased demand due to the end of the MOT extension granted during the initial lockdown. To book an MOT at any of our Elite Garages, simply visit the website and complete the required information.
Should I Delay Getting My MOT Tested?
No. By law, vehicles require a valid MOT. MOT tests check that your car is roadworthy and meets important safety and environmental standards. This is crucial for your own safety and that of other drivers.
There was a six-month MOT test exemption introduced in March during the first lockdown to avoid unnecessary driving and close contact. However, there has not yet been a further extension this time, so it is important that you get your vehicle tested and certified. If you are found to be driving a car with an expired MOT certificate, you could be fined up to £1,000.

What About Vehicle Servicing During Lockdown?
If you need to use your car during the lockdown, it has to be roadworthy so if your vehicle is due for a routine service, it is best to book it in.
However, if you or someone you live with has Covid-19 symptoms or have been told by the NHS Test and Trace service that you’ve been in contact with someone who has coronavirus, it is important that you do not bring your vehicle for its MOT or service. If either of these situations applies you must stay at home and self-isolate.
